I support the second group of people. I think that literature is not the most important school subject for pupils’ futures. Firstly, learning maths and computer studies is not less valuable than learning literature. It is impossible nowadays to live an everyday life without being able to work with numbers and use the Internet. In addition, digital literacy is necessary in many modern professions and jobs. 

Secondly, learning about famous writers, analyzing their works and writing essays at school is not enough to become a literate person. Learning a native language at school is as important too, because it teaches the rules of how to use the language in speaking and writing. 

Despite the arguments mentioned above, opponents argue that literature is the most important school subject because reading, writing and speaking are necessary parts of any studies and work.

I am not in favour of that opinion. The reasons are that there are many jobs and areas of study based on maths, computer studies and programming, for example, rather than on reading or speaking. Moreover, learning languages at school is often more relevant for writing skills than learning literature. 

In conclusion, completing this essay, I would like to reiterate that my opinion is as follows. I am convinced that literature is not the most valuable school subject for pupils’ futures. (251)
